Dr Copper doesn’t agree with Dr Chalmers’ growth outlook
Treasurer Jim Chalmers is talking down the state of global growth. But while the risks are real, not every indicator is so bearish.
It’s beginning to look a lot like federal budget season, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers – fresh from a trip to Washington – beginning the annual softening-up process ahead of the second Tuesday in May.
Chalmers is talking up the dangers to Australia’s fiscal position, from Treasury’s weaker growth forecasts for China, Japan and the UK, to a sagging iron ore price and conflict in the Middle East. The government will need to cut its cloth appropriately, he said on Monday.
